Does your child struggle with word problems?

It is very common for a child to be great at the Arithmetic Paper but struggle with the Reasoning papers.​
This is because, in the Reasoning Papers your child has to understand a problem in context and then decide which mathematical skills they need to use. When I first started teaching in Year 6, over a decade ago, I noticed children answering problems incorrectly (or leaving them) that I knew they were fully competent in answering.

Here is just one example of the same math skill presented in the Arithmetic Paper and then the Reasoning Paper. In both you need to find a percentage of an amount. The first one is explicit, but in the second one, you need to use context to figure out you are actually finding 70% of £15.

The good news is that I have collated some common Reasoning style problems into categories and demonstrate some useful strategies to solve them in my Maths Comprehension Masterclass.
