How does your child cope with word problems?

It is so common for children who seem to be confident with arithmetic then struggle with word problems.
In class, children know the objective they are learning. For example in a lesson on division, they will practice the arithmetic skill and then perhaps apply this to some division word problems.

However, in SATs, they are exposed to a lot of different word problems which cover the whole range of skills from Year 3 - 6. They have to figure out which math skills they need to use to solve each problem- they are not told which math skill. Children often misread questions, have mental blocks, rush or just don't have the strategies to help them. Read more in my blog.

Read my latest blog on why word problems are hard.

I have put together a short downloadable course which covers some common categories of word problems and I demonstrate how to approach them, using real examples of past SATs questions. Download it here.

All you need is a phone, tablet or laptop to view the tutorials and preferably a printer to print off the workbook.
